The Certified Performance Specialist™(CPS) accreditation
has been created for the specific goal of increasing
physical activity in public safety professions through quality,
scientifically-backed education. Currently, there are
no certifications available to municipalities that comprehensively
trains
public servants and explains the scientific principles behind physical
activity, wellness, and job performance through classroom and hands-on
practical evaluation in this fashion. The CPS™ credential is meant
to increase the quality of effort in physically demanding jobs as seen
in public safety, reduce the risk and severity of sustained injuries,
decrease workman's compensation claims through the promotion of a
higher tolerance for physical and cognitive stress on the body, and
improve the efficiency of labor within any given department by
developing healthier, more productive personnel who are less likely to miss work due to illness or injury.
The
CPS™ accreditation is not a general fitness certification.
It has been developed by public safety personnel with an emphasis
on physical performance and overall health and wellness,
with a specific focus on the application of
exercise science and kinesiology to meet the demands of the job.
Personnel who hold the CPS™ credential are responsible for
maintaining current educational status by earning 6.0 continuing
education units (CEUs) from various approved fitness events and
organizations every two years. Those who have successfully passed
the CPS™ accreditation are expected to apply and develop wellness
programs within their own department. It is our hope that this
certification helps public safety personnel live longer, more
productive lives, with a higher overall quality through the reduction of
preventable disease and physical injury.
